Fort Collins Home Advice-Drafty House Tips:

Feel like your hard earned money is disappearing into thin air?  Well if your house is drafty in spots that just might be the case.  There are many energy saving tips for eliminating some of those annoying cold spots in your Fort Collins home.

One of the fastest ways to save energy dollars is proper caulking and weather stripping all the seams and open cracks that let the cold air into your home during fall and winter seasons.  On a windy day you can check where these drafts are by simply lighting an incense stick and following the stream it makes to the drafted areas.

Also, caulk and seal gaps where electrical and plumbing fixtures are located in and around your home and basement.  You can install rubber gaskets behind wall outlets and switch plates that will stop cold air flow from coming in those locations as well.

If your budget allows it’s a very good idea to replace old windows with new double pane windows, which can lead to a substantial savings on energy, not to mention the government tax credit rewarded to you when adding this improvement to your Fort Collins home.   The savings can range from 15% to 25%, which in today’s economy is always welcomed.

And lastly, if your home has a fireplace, make sure when not in use to keep the flue damper closed tightly.   Chimneys are a common source of heat loss, and sometimes this goes completely undetected and your energy literally goes right out through the roof!

These tips and hints will save plenty of your hard earned money, and all you have to do is take a little of your time to investigate and be pro-active before the chill of fall and winter arrive, leaving your money in your wallet where it belongs.
